MU became the laughing stock of Europe League

LOUIS VAN GAAL agreed that Manchester United were rubbish as they became the laughing stock of Europe here last night.

Furious fans chanted, “We’re s**t” after witnessing the most humiliating defeat in the club’s European history against Danish minnows Midtjylland – who hadn’t played a competitive game for more than two months.

A beleaguered Van Gaal did not contest their view after a 2-1 first-leg defeat in the Europa League last-32 round that left him with an even bigger fight to save his job.

Asked about the chant by their own fans, he said: “The fans can criticise – and when you see the second half, maybe they are right.

“They are disappointed like we are. In the second half I have to say that Midtjylland were winning every ball. That is very disappointing because that is the key to this game.

“I cannot answer why our players were not winning the second balls to keep the ball in our possession. We had a lot of unnecessary losses of the ball. At this moment I can only analyse that Midtjylland were winning the second balls and then you can expect that they score out of a few chances.”

Problems continue to pile up for Van Gaal. Goalkeeper David De Gea pulled out of last night’s game with a knee injury suffered in the warm-up.

He is a doubt for Monday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie at Shrewsbury.

The Spaniard will have a scan tomorrow. At least it was good news for one man forever connected with Manchester United.
